What the Mirror of Erised really showed us about Dumbledore

The Mirror of Erised gave us a lot of insight on our favorite characters. Specifically, what they truly desired. But what did it tell us about Dumbledore?

When Harry asked Dumbledore what he saw when he looked into the Mirror of Erised, our favorite headmaster calmly answered with socks. Socks? Socks. Thick wool socks to be more specific. We all just assume that he is a simple man with simple desires. But  as the series goes on, we know that there is a darkness inside Dumbledore. As there is in everyone. And the answer is a bit different than socks.

As time passes and we get a little more insight into not only who Dumbledore truly is, but also what his past was like. We learn about the difficult upbringing he had and the people that he lost along the way. With this is why family is so important to the professor. It’s also possible that his upbringing was the reason why he was so insistent that Harry go and live with the Dursleys. No matter how bad everyone knew they were. If there is one thing we learned for certain, it was Dumbledore’s opinion on family.

We know that the Mirror of Erised doesn’t provide answers or knowledge. We also learn what Dumbledore truly sees when he looks into the mirror himself. And it has nothing to do with clothing. He like Harry sees his family together, alive and well. This is probably the reason why Dumbledore had so much wisdom when he told Harry that he can’t just sit and live in the dream that the mirror is showing him. He has to move on and actually live his life. We know now that this is because Dumbledore felt the same way.
