Hannah Hart: From My Drunk Kitchen to Food Network star
By Samantha Puc
When Hannah Hart launched My Drunk Kitchen in 2011, it was meant to be a one-off video for her former roommate. Six years later, she has her own Food Network show.
Hannah Hart first stumbled onto YouTube six years ago in a quippy, hilarious home video. In the first episode of My Drunk Kitchen, she gets drunk and attempts (keyword) to make grilled cheese. She made the video for her former roommate, who commented on a social media post of Hart’s declaring that she missed Hart’s drunk cooking. The video was funny enough that she encouraged Hart to make it public, and she did.
In that first episode, Hart declares, “This is a show about making sure you don’t puke your guts out. This is a show about friendship.” Then she discovers she doesn’t even have cheese and makes sourdough pan toast instead.
My Drunk Kitchen started as a one-off, humorous video that has become a media darling. Every episode follows a formula. Hart starts sober, then imbibes as she cooks, bakes, or otherwise attempts to make edible food. Early episodes all take place in different people’s kitchens. She has collaborated with other YouTubers and celebrities, and even gone abroad.
The series has launched Hart to stardom. She wrote a parody self help/cookbook, has gone on national comedy tours with her friends, and even starred in movies. On August 14, she joins the Food Network family in I Hart Food.
Although she has clearly learned a thing or two about food since that fateful grilled cheese disaster, or even the time she tried to make ice cream, Hannah Hart apparently won’t be cooking on I Hart Food. Instead, she’ll be following in the footsteps of Anthony Bourdain and Guy Fieri, traveling and eating and hanging out with chefs.
It seems she will also be continuing her YouTube presence. The most recent episode of My Drunk Kitchen posted in June. She was also a June guest judge on Food Network Star. Hannah Hart’s success, especially as a young lesbian who built her following through the internet, has been incredible to witness.
