When it comes to Doctor Who, it has always been a white man. But now the game is changing and it is extremely important. Here’s why.
Doctor Who has always been a white man. There is no questioning that. From the dawning of the show, white man after white man took over the mantle. And now, that’s not to say we hated it. We loved a lot of the Doctors that came and went; there was always a love there.
However, the show lacked a lot of the representation that we all longed for. The companions came in all shapes and sizes, but we wanted our Doctor to look like we did. Little girls and boys longed for the Doctor to be like them.
Now, we still don’t have a person of color taking on the role, but at least this is a step in the right direction. We finally have a woman taking on the mantle and already little girls are crying because they realize that they too can be the Doctor.
While the internet is filled with men complaining about it, you have to realize how important this is for little girls. They can look at the Doctor and realize they too can be the Time Lord traveling through time and space.
At first, I thought it was going to be Riz Ahmed and I was totally into that idea but Jodie Whittaker is even better. She consistently puts out amazing work and she already seems like a great successor to Capaldi’s darker Doctor.

So while many men (and women alike) are looking at this as a negative, it’s not really up to us. This show was meant for children and this is going to show so many kids that they can be anything. Girls don’t have to be the companion or the assistant, they can be the Doctor. And that’s worth it all.
