9. “I’m a Jedi, like my father before me”

Which Star Wars film it happened in: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi

I’m sure people are wondering how this could be a silly or dumb moment, considering it’s Luke Skywalker’s best scene. Really, I totally agree that it encapsulates everything that makes Star Wars so great. He’s wearing his best outfit and defying the Emperor’s expectation. Luke chooses not to fall to the Dark Side, even though it may cost him everything. He doesn’t allow himself to be intimidated, and the strength of his hope even pulls his father back to the Light Side of the Force. It’s wonderful.

But unless you’re super reading into it like I just did, it looks like he ditched his only weapon as he stood in front of someone who could’ve totally destroyed him. This was Emperor Palpatine, a ruthless and cunning leader who bested many Jedi and Sith versus Luke Skywalker, a novice full of heart.

Of course, we know how the story ends and we know that Luke ultimately hulks out and rages on his father in the final battle that also features an amazing score. But if Star Wars: Return of the Jedi wanted to be more honest, that fight would’ve never happened if Emperor Palpatine decided to waste him sooner. He could’ve fried him sunnyside up and Luke would’ve been able to do nothing.

He only lucked out because he’s the 1/3 hero of the trilogy.
