Everybody’s buzzing about GLOW, Netflix’s new series about a 1980s women’s wrestling show and the amazing women who bring it to life. Here are three other places to turn to if you can’t get enough fierce females, believable bodyslams, and glittery costumes.
GLOW’s got it all. It’s got action. It’s got humor. It’s got heart.
So, what are we supposed to do when we already binged the whole season and need our heartfelt lady wrestler fix?
Here are three suggestions:
GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling
First, check out the 2012 documentary GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling about the real life ’80s women’s wrestling show the Netflix series is based on. The doc cleaned up at film fests and Comic Cons at the time and gives you a colorful glimpse into the real women behind the hairspray and camp. You can find it streaming on Netflix now.
The Mae Young Classic on WWE
If you’re looking for something a little more modern, but just as dramatic, next month WWE will kick off their first-ever Mae Young Classic women’s tournament. 32 top female wrestlers will face off in the single-elimination competition, which is named after WWE Hall of Famer Mae Young. Things will throw down starting August 28 and the final match will stream live from Vegas on September 12.
Team USA’s women’s wrestling page
Of course if it’s a little more realistic but just as riveting women’s wrestling you’re interested in, Team USA’s women’s wrestling page will keep you up to date on training news and upcoming championship matches, plus some pretty good profiles and interviews with the powerhouse ladies and potential future Olympians themselves.
