6. Ruth “Zoya the Destroya” Wilder

Ruth “Zoya the Destroya” Wilder is a mess. Although she is the lead character GLOW, she spends the entire series trying to prove to Sam and Bash that she should be the lead character on their show. (Gotta love that meta.) She is “a real actress” who cannot find the kinds of parts she wants, because no one seems to be writing them. When she goes for GLOW, it is because she has nothing left to lose, having already slept with her best friend’s husband and discovered that she is called in for auditions as a sample of what directors do not want.

Ruth spends nearly the entire first season faffing over what character she should play in the ring. She works off of being a homewrecker and eventually develops Zoya the Destroya, a Russian villain out to destroy Liberty Belle (the All-American Hero). The character is wildly over the top and Ruth does her absolute best to steal the show with her on a regular basis, never to be deterred even when she is completely shut down.

Alison Brie slays in all of Ruth’s scenes, though the secondhand embarrassment of Ruth’s more half-witted plans to prove herself is so real. Brie dives into this character with everything she has and it’s evident in the way that Ruth is able to explore so many emotions and motivations without losing any part of herself along the way. Brie’s consistency and dedication to the character is admirable and makes her an excellent lead for this show.
