11 underrated shows you probably aren’t watching but should be

Difficult People, Hulu
The premise: Two wannabe comics, played by Billy Eichner and Julie Klausner, try to break into the business in New York City, although neither of them have much hustle or talent for self-sacrifice. They are vapid, shallow humans, with very few interpersonal skills, and pretty much live in a bubble of misguided entitlement and sarcasm.
Billy and Julie are best friends and co-writers who desperately want fame and celebrity to come to them, but they aren’t really willing to do any work. Their friendship offers a lot of laughs, but although they are total besties, they’re also their own worst enemies. Instead of putting in any hard work or focusing on self-improvement, they would much rather lounge around town and snark on everyone (including Blue Ivy and the Real Housewives).
Why you’ll love it: It’s very funny, although it’s also super, duper mean. This is exactly how I prefer my humor, but beware, they do not soft-sell any of the punchlines. The show is not afraid to make fun of its main characters, mostly because they are garbage humans, but it’s also really protective of their own motivations. This means that we can acknowledge how ridiculous they are in the greater sense, we still want them to succeed because they are just so thirsty for it.
There is also a glut of pop culture references and jokes that make my heart super happy. If you’re interested in jokes at celebrities’ expenses, you must binge this entire show.
How to watch: You can catch up on seasons one and two on Hulu. Season three premieres in August.
