Heading into the holiday weekend, 20th Century Fox is planning way ahead. The studio has reserved dates for new releases – they just haven’t revealed which movies.
Don’t expect a decrease in superhero movies over the next few years. 20th Century Fox has just announced six more.
Even with the stellar performance of Wonder Woman, Marvel is still the dominant superhero studio. Now, along with their 2018 lineup, fans can look forward to six more films.
Fox is looking to dominate each season, scheduling the releases about five months apart. The movies will hit theaters on June 7 and Nov. 22 in 2019 and March 13, June 26 and Oct. 2 in 2020, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The next year will be a bit lighter, with only one release scheduled for March 5, 2021.
But which films are they? That’s the million (or more likely, a few billion) dollar question. 20th Century Fox retains the rights to several Marvel properties, most prominently The Fantastic Four.
The studio has tried three times to create a successful screen version, but has consistently fallen flat. Still, a sequel is said to be in the works for 2015’s version. This has the potential to finally hit the mark – the first film, branded as Fant4stic, completely covered the team’s origin story (it wasn’t great, but it was covered). With that out of the way, the entire world opens up, with the luxury of time to tell it.
There are plenty of other contenders, mostly including sequels. Deadpool 2 will introduce Cable and Domino, which could expand Ryan Reynolds’s franchise or create material for new standalone films.
At this point, no one’s really sure what’s happening with Channing Tatum’s Gambit. But, given that Fox’s claimed dates extend into 2021, the studio has some time to figure it out.
