6. Its unresolved questions

Every time you watch Blade Runner, you can find something you missed on all of your previous viewings. Since its release 35 years ago, there’s certainly been enough time for fans to mull over all of the movie’s intricacies. It doesn’t really help that there are currently seven versions of Blade Runner knocking about in the world.

No matter what version you’re watching (though the Director’s Cut and the 25th anniversary remastered edition are probably your best bets), the core film has plenty of details. There’s lots to consider about the replicants, for example. What are the differences between the escaped Nexus-6 replicants led by Batty, and the unwitting Rachel? Could there be other replicants peppered throughout the film?

In fact, many speculate that Deckard himself could be one. All of his memories, after all, could have been implanted by Tyrell. Ridley Scott actually laid down the law on the Deckard replicant question years ago, but it’s honestly more fun and thought-provoking to leave the question unanswered.

Or perhaps you want to consider the dystopia of 2019 Los Angeles. What happened, exactly? Why are so many people living in what amounts to a series of cubicles, while Tyrell lives in a high-tech ziggurat? Just who are Deckard’s mysterious associates? What’s with the origami?

If you’re a lover of unresolved questions, then Blade Runner has plenty in store.
