Blade Runner is a towering classic of science fiction and film noir. Here are 15 reasons you should drop everything and watch this movie right now.
When it was first released, few people expected Blade Runner to last. A number of critics were irritated by its slow pace and artistic pretensions. As much as other reviewers and audience members were compelled by its strange visuals and thoughtful storyline, few likely bet that it would become a classic of science fiction cinema.
Even while filming, the outlook appeared grim. Director Ridley Scott made disparaging remarks about his American crew, which then leaked to the crew members and caused considerable tension. Harrison Ford, who played the titular “blade runner” Rick Deckard, was reportedly annoyed by Scott and never became entirely comfortable on set.
Yet, after its 1982 release and poor initial showing, Blade Runner eventually became something of a cult hit. Its skillful blending of science fiction and film noir made it one of the best-regarded films in either genre. And while some were put off by its pace, others reveled in the introspective moodiness of the film. The problem of the replicants, self-aware bioengineered beings, is so fascinating that fans and philosophy students alike have been mulling over it for decades now.
Blade Runner 2049
Now, Blade Runner is set to have its long-awaited film sequel. Though there have been literary follow-ups and seven (yes, seriously, seven) versions of the original, it has taken nearly 35 years for a movie sequel to emerge. And while sequels may give you pause, hopes are high for this one. Blade Runner 2049, set to premiere in October of this year, will be directed by Denis Villeneuve. The Canadian filmmaker most recently won acclaim for the Academy Award-nominated science fiction film Arrival.
