The Handmaid’s Tale star Elisabeth Moss has already shared some ideas that might make it into the show’s second season, but how could they play out?

Since the season finale of The Handmaid’s Tale arrived on Hulu early this morning, fans who have already watched want to know what comes next. (And if you haven’t watched but want to know the basics such that you can continue reading, the Culturess recap of “Night” is right this way, because there will be spoilers starting below.)

Throughout the season, Offred and Serena Joy had perhaps the most complex relationship of them all. Towards the end of the series, we saw that the restraints placed on them (for Serena, by laws she helped write, something she reconfirmed in the finale) both chafed, leading to expressions of anger and frustration. In Offred’s case, it was primarily aimed at Serena. In Serena’s case, she went directly to her husband, Commander Waterford.

Even though the finale ended with Offred getting in a van, not knowing where she was going, Elisabeth Moss has hinted that we haven’t seen the last of either of these two women. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, here’s what she said:

"“There’s the dynamic of Serena and Offred having this baby between them.”"

The finale hinted at this already. Serena started referring to the unborn baby as hers, which, by the laws of Gilead, it is. But Offred has already started expressing defiance more openly both to her and to other members of society like Aunt Lydia. Additionally, the phrasing hints that the two may interact again in season 2, despite wherever Offred is going at the end of the first season.

Fortunately, Yvonne Strahovski and Moss stand out in an extremely well-cast series. Seeing them play off each other again would help elevate The Handmaid’s Tale season 2 to the levels of season 1.
