Stephen Colbert celebrates St. Comey’s Day

As expected, the bulk of Stephen Colbert’s opener from last night’s episode centered around yesterday’s testimony from James Comey.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert did not shy away from wading into the waters of the James Comey testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee. And how could the show have done otherwise?

Although ratings don’t appear to have come out as of the time of this writing, the New York Times reported on June 7 about all the preparations being made for people to watch the hearing live.

So, the better part of Colbert’s monologue was about “St. Comey’s Day.” Check it out below. (Content note: no swearing, but a reference to Brazilian waxes of all things. Yes, it makes more sense in context.)

Although Donald Trump had not tweeted about the hearing live, despite reports to the contrary suggesting he would, he did this morning. The Washington Post has the details.

CBS, as you can probably tell, was one of the many channels that broadcast the Comey hearing, which means that Colbert didn’t have to cite quite as many articles as he usually does. He could just go to the tape (and he did! Over and over). However, if you don’t have time to sit through the entire hearing, the New York Times has published the transcripts in full, with a video of the hearing at the top just in case you do decide later that you need to watch.

Despite the seriousness of the hearing, something which Colbert did point out prior to the flurry of jokes (although after the St. Comey’s Day joke!), he did make sure to tell some jokes and lighten the mood a little.

Even if it meant miming a Brazilian waxing session or doing his best Chicago Bulls announcer voice, “Sirius” and all.

Next: Stephen Colbert's inevitable pun

What will he talk about tonight? We’ll just have to tune in and see.
