Today marks 32 years since Ferris Bueller and his friends took the day off

Ferris Bueller and his crazy day off became a cultural phenomenon. We still watch it with awe and today marks 32 years since his day off.

It was 32 years ago today that Ferris Bueller decided he needed the day off. For those who haven’t seen the film, stop reading and go out right now. No really, it’s a rite of passage. Growing up, everyone should have at least one viewing of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

The film starring Matthew Broderick gave an entire generation the soundtrack to rebellion and also taught us how not to roll back miles on a car. For super fans of the film, you might be saying that we have the date wrong. Well, in fact, the movie itself premiered on June 11 but Ferris’s actual day off was June 5, 1985.

Honestly though, what a movie to keep us going, right? Following a young boy and his day off sick from school, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off taught us all to make the most of life, even if that means lying to get out of our responsibilities.

To be fair, we never said it was the greatest example for kids. But the movie is generally adored. (I myself can vividly remember watching it for the first time and realizing that I was Cameron.) And it gave us such iconic scenes like this wonderful moment of Ferris, Cameron and Sloane standing in front of A Sunday Afternoon on La Grande Jatte.

It is just a movie that defines so much of what we love about John Hughes movies that we can’t help but love it still to this day. The movie is 32 years old and still kids watch it and fall in love with Cameron, Sloane and, most importantly, Ferris.
