Wonder Woman’s heading toward near-$100 million US debut

Buoyed by positive reviews and an amazing Rotten Tomatoes score, Wonder Woman’s tracking toward a much bigger box office opening than previously expected.

The weight placed upon Wonder Woman’s shoulders has always been great. She always carried the mantle of being a feminist icon who could be both compassionate and the greatest fighter in comics history. Like any woman, Diana Prince’s dynamic was a balance of sex appeal and a sophisticated level of badassery that could not be duplicated.

Often, this put her in hot water and made her the topic of endless debate. But when it comes to her live-action film, this pressure translated to the film’s star, Gal Gadot, and its director, Patty Jenkins.

If Wonder Woman was going to make her first live-action, big screen debut, she needed to do it with grace and pizzazz. But in a post-Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad world, the expectations became a little bit darker as DC Comics fans lost faith in Warner Bros. and their art direction.

However, consider it a mistake to discount Princess Diana of Themyscira before she even gets the chance to demonstrate what Wonder Woman can do.

And such is the case with her box office numbers and reviews. Where many expected Wonder Woman to come in low around the $65 million mark, the industry’s throwing out a new number. Where people expected another terrible Rotten Tomatoes weekend, Wonder Woman’s certified fresh.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Wonder Woman will open to around $95 million in the United States. Then, the film will go onto an international opening “well north” of $100 million.

If Wonder Woman makes that much, it’ll put her in league with other established franchise entries, like The Fate of the Furious, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Transformers: Age of Extinction.
