Episode 8: Kimmy confronts Titus about his selfishness

As much as I love Titus, he’s been driving me crazy lately. Apparently, he’s been driving Kimmy crazy lately too, because his consistently selfish tendencies keep getting everyone around him into trouble. Early on, this made him an excellent foil for Kimmy, who had done absolutely nothing truly for herself in years. But after three seasons of him constantly taking dumps on the people who care about him, Kimmy forces Titus to prove to her that he’s serious about being her friend and roommate. And Titus, (of course because we know he is good and lovable), follows through and pursues “his Kimmy.”

Of course, it took a ridiculous subplot to get here, a weird cannibalism story that took up the better part of an episode. But like much of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, the point wasn’t the bizarre details of the story, but rather, the motives behind it — Titus’s constant feeling of being stuck and unappreciated for his talents, his desire to get ahead even at the expense of others, and, ultimately, his higher desire to be a good person…or at least a passably okay one, kind enough for his overwhelmingly loving and lovable roommate. Good job, Titus. You passed the test.
