Episode 13: Kimmy embraces her new job (and a dog)

Where seasons 1 and 2 ended with shocks, season 3 ends with joy. Kimmy has just embraced her own self-sacrificing nature on her own terms, only to find out that because of that very nature, she can’t have the job she wanted. She’s still married to the Reverend, a sex offender, and the government won’t hire her as a result, even though she’s only married to him to spare someone else. There’s a moment of some serious self-reflection where allegedly “unbreakable” Kimmy is ready to give up, but Lillian readies her hammer and tracks down, miraculously, the one person who wants to and can help her: Zach. Zach, who struggles to communicate with others, wants Kimmy to help him at his new start-up, simply because she took the time to acknowledge him and make him feel comfortable in her presence. Kimmy’s good nature wins again.

And it looks like she’ll be genuinely happy at whatever this start-up is. It has a ball pit and lots of super cute dogs. What I love most about the season finale is how big a win it is for optimism in an increasingly pessimistic world. Through Kimmy, we all are reminded just how far kindness and joy can go in connecting with others and improving the world. After watching that last scene, I feel like Kimmy could do just about anything…and perhaps, next season, she will!
