Lorelai Gilmore – Gilmore Girls
This one hurts, folks. I hate to really complain about one of TV’s most popular characters, but it bears stating that Lorelai is really kind of appalling.
Since the show is told through her voice and point of view, it’s easy to lose sight of what makes Lorelai so bad. We want to root for the plucky single mom, who is also both beautiful and charming. She seems like she wants to do her best, but she just can’t help but be completely selfish and immature. Don’t send me hate mail. It pains me to say it, I swear.
Lorelai was terrible at relationships mostly because she actively self-sabotaged at every turn. She always wanted things exactly like she wanted them, and wouldn’t bend or compromise. She dug her heels in when she needed to negotiate and burned a lot of bridges in the meantime.
Although she was devoted mother, she did the same with Rory as she got older. When Rory made decisions she didn’t agree with, her tactic was to demand she do things Lorelai’s way or else. When Rory wouldn’t comply, she’d cut her off and give her the silent treatment.
These two had one of the most iconic mother-daughter relationships, but it’s probably because they were both kind of unlikable. Birds of a feather, and all.
