Master of None – Now

Starring: Aziz Anasari, Eric Warenhiem, Noel Wells, and Lena Waithe

Premise: The show is loosely bases on Ansari’s real life, and takes a comedic approach to his struggles with race, romance, and his professional life. Aziz plays Dev, a New York-based actor, who is trying to sort out what he really wants in life, both professionally and personally.

While there aren’t any huge dramatic plot gimmicks, it is rife with authentic drama and poignancy. Dev grapples with dating, offering hilarious insight into texting, sexual etiquette, and commitment. He also takes on larger issues as he faces discrimination in his acting career. The show is a mix of Seinfeld, GIRLS, and Friends, and will captivate you from the very first episode.  Anasari writes smart and topical TV, but it never feels like you’re eating your veggies. You’ll love it.

The buzz: It was pretty well received. It’s approachable and relatable to fans, and critics praised how it handled larger issues. Variety says:

"“Even more impressive than the relationship stories are “Master’s” adroit examinations of matters of gender and race, which are used as fodder for a bracing blend of nimble comedy and knowing cultural commentary. It’s as if an earnest op-ed piece came to vivid life in an effort to make the viewer laugh out loud — and succeeded in the attempt.”"

How to watch: Both seasons are available on Netflix.
