Snowfall – July 5
Starring: Damson Idris, Isaiah John, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Carter Hudson
Premise: This series is a the story of the burgeoning crack-cocaine epidemic of the early 1980s. The show was created by John Singleton, who is also responsible for Boyz N The Hood and Higher Learning. It picks up in 1983, when crack first started to become a destructive force in South Central Los Angeles.
As the epidemic spreads, the show details the effects it has on the community and its influence on its identity as a whole. The show is told from the perspective of a small business owner and takes a look at the debilitating results. Singleton himself is a LA-native who grew up during this time, and offers a unique perspective into this moment in our shared history. The show is as much a character study as it is an examination of societal trauma at a global level.
The buzz: It’s really, really promising. Critics are saying it’s powerful and moving, and will be a hugely effective force on the TV landscape. JET Magazine says, “it’s bound to give a whole new generation a distinct vantage point on exactly went down.”
