Princess Leia: Her importance for women and Star Wars fans in general

When it comes to important women, Princess Leia is pretty high up on the list of influential ladies and we owe all of this to Star Wars.

Princess Leia is an icon. But not just because of her amazing skills as a general but because of what the character did for women. Before her, sure we had some strong ladies but nothing like Leia Organa. The princess turned general of the Rebel Alliance saved the men.

Without her, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Chewbacca would have been dead. But she came to their rescue time and time again. She helped free Han from the carbonite and she ended up having a wonderful political career.

But more than all of that, she became a feminist icon. Seeing how Leia could stand above the men and come out strong in the end, it gave us girls hope. And still does. Remember the Womens March? Leia was featured everywhere.

So this May the Fourth Be With You, it’s a little sad. We all miss Carrie Fisher and the impact she left behind when she passed away this winter and we’ve been feeling it since. From Celebration to this Star Wars Day, we all wish she was still here.

So today go out and remember the importance of Leia. Remember that she taught us that a girl doesn’t have to stand behind a man. That she can be a badass even in a white dress. That we make our own stories and that we too can be a general.

Carrie Fisher and Leia are both extremely important to us all and on this May 4, we remember them both.
