Game of Thrones might come to an end, but like a White Walker, the franchise will rise again at HBO, and perhaps even more than once.
The Game of Thrones theme song is one of the most recognizable in modern TV. One has to wonder if we’ll get to hear variants of it for years to come, much like how the Law & Order spinoffs all have their variations on the theme. Variety reported today that HBO has four separate Thrones spinoffs being developed.
Let’s look at the names reported:
- Carly Wray — The Leftovers, Mad Men, Constantine
- Max Borenstein — The upcoming Godzilla movie and developer of the TV version of Minority Report
- Jane Goldman — Screenplays of Stardust, both Kingsman movies, and The Woman in Black
- Brian Helgeland — A Knight’s Tale, L.A. Confidential, Robin Hood (2010)
We have to say that seeing a Thrones series in the hands of Wray or Goldman would be fascinating after the flagship has primarily involved men from the start. Besides that, both of them have solid resumes. Variety notes both women have the opportunity to work with George R.R. Martin. That might not be much. However, it could be a sign that HBO is more interested in their work.
Anyway, this all seems quite far off. Remember, the show won’t end until 2018 at the very earliest with season 8. It could be that HBO will want to wait until even 2019 to keep fans hungry for more instead of overloading them with the final season of Thrones and the start of a spinoff in the same year.
After all, people watched a block of ice melt in order to find out season 7’s premiere date. This is a dedicated fanbase.
That seems reasonable considering Variety‘s report, which adds that HBO doesn’t have a specific timeframe in mind for when these shows should start airing.
