Grace and Frankie – Netflix
I know it seems like a comedy about two rich, white women in their 70s might not be so relatable, but Grace and Frankie totally is. It’s mostly about the aging process and how differently life can look as you get older. But it’s also about female friendships, romantic entanglements, and the professional struggles after divorce.
Grace and Frankie is about two women whose husbands fall in love after a 20-year affair, divorce them, and marry each other. Neither woman had any idea their husbands were even gay, much less in love, and struggle to come to terms with the new normal.
Grace is a conservative, uptight, WASP, retired from a successful corporate career, and a high functioning alcoholic. Repression and sarcasm is her default coping mechanism, and she puts on a cold exterior. Forced to move in with long-time acquaintance, Frankie, she rolls her eyes at her free-spirited lifestyle. Frankie is a hold-over hippie who wears concert tees and smokes a lot of weed. They are definitely an odd couple.
The show is sweet and caustic, all at once. It will make you want to grab up your best friends, call your mother, and kiss your spouse. It’s worth the 30 minute episodes.
Starring: Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Martin Sheen, and Sam Waterston
