Casual – Amazon Prime Video
Sometimes you need to watch a show that’s going to remind you that maybe you really are okay. Casual is one of those shows that puts its characters through the minute emotional paces that real folks have to deal with every day, but you know, in a funnier and more interesting way.
The Amazon original follows Valerie, a recently divorced therapist and mother who is forced to move in with her eclectic brother in a super swanky house. She grapples with all the regular post-divorce stuff you can imagine, mostly limping through it all. Her daughter is a bit of handful, challenging Valerie on every decision and choice. Her brother, Alex, is an emotional toddler who’s codependence on his sister is crippling to them both.
I know I’ve made it sound like a real bummer, but it’s really a delight. Writers approach the post-divorce story with humor and an awkward grace that is supremely enjoyable. It’s also desperately relatable. At least once an episode, I recognize myself in Valerie’s life, and I feel a little better about my general situation. These episodes are also only a half hour, so it’s a quick and reliable watch.
Starring: Michaela Watkins, Tommy Dewey, and Tara Lynne Barr
