Peaky Blinders – Netflix
There are few shows cooler than Peaky Blinders, and it will make you cooler just for having watched it. It’s dark, gritty, and violent, and will surprise you over and over. It’s the best addition to the gangster genre since The Sopranos, and you’ll absolutely consider a life of crime after watching it.
Peaky Blinders, originally airing on the BBC, is about the Shelby family in 1920s Birmingham, England. As leader of the crime family, Tommy Shelby really wants to take his family into legitimate business but it’s not as easy as he thought. In fact, he has to do some pretty seedy stuff to get his family into the legalized gambling industry.
Not only does it have lots of mob-based intrigue and drama, but it’s also smart and surprisingly heartfelt. Tommy is stoic and often robotic in his execution of family business, but he is fiercely loyal and protective over his loved ones.
To make it even cooler, it’s scored with all sorts of hipster, indie music that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled onto something super rad before anybody else has. Look for music from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Jack White, PJ Harvey, and Ane Brun.
Starring: Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy, Helen McCrory, and Paul Anderson
