This show is, hands down, one of the best, most riveting shows on TV, and you need to be watching it. Period. Just stop what you’re doing and head straight to your couch and watch this show. It will change your life.
Rectify is a SundanceTV original about Daniel Holden. Daniel was convicted for the rape and murder of his high school girlfriend and he spent 19 years in jail — most of those in solitary confinement. Thanks to a scrappy lawyer, Daniel’s conviction was overturned and he’s released into his small, Georgia hometown.
Although there is still the matter of whether he did it or not, Rectify isn’t a whodunnit. It’s really about Daniel discovering the world all over again, and figuring out how he fits in the world. After spending so much time cut off from any human contact, Daniel has to be born into the world all over again. It’s beautifully and artfully written and executed and it’s guaranteed to give you an existential crisis.
Rectify is also a show about place, and treats its Southern setting with an intricate respectability. It considers what it means to come from somewhere, and how that can contribute to who you are as a person. This show is a beautiful poem to the human condition, and it will make you feel things. No small feat for a television show.
