GIRLS – HBOGo

GIRLS garnered a lot of mixed reactions when it first premiered in 2012. Nobody really knew what to make of Lena Dunham, and her point of view was so provocative in its exploration of the young, modern woman, it seemed like something brand new.

The HBO show, partially produced by Judd Apatow, follows the lives of four women, fresh out of college, trying to make a life in New York City. The show received a lot of criticism for its unrealistic depiction of the economics of these young ladies living on their own, but it wasn’t the first show to stretch the limits of disbelief in that matter.

It also received criticism for indulging the entitlement of these very annoying, self-involved people who didn’t seem to know how to look past the end of their nose to the world around them. And in the first few seasons, this isn’t an unfair characterization.

But the show is mostly about growth and evolution, and it follows the women as they explore their own identities. And it’s about friendships. Any woman knows the struggles of maintaining female friendships as you move through life, and this show gets it right.

Starring: Lena Dunham, Jemina Kirke, Allison Williams, and Zosia Mammet
