I know what you’re thinking. You don’t need another teen drama in your life, especially one with this many good-looking folks solving a murder mystery. But take my word for it, you definitely do. Riverdale will surprise the heck out of you. With its gritty Twin Peaks-vibe, its stylized noir cinematography, and its precocious characters, it might just be one of the season’s best freshman efforts.
Riverdale is loosely (very, very loosely) based on the Archie comic series, following the lives of Archie, Jughead, Betty and Veronica. This interpretation updates the mid-century comic, turning it into a dark whodunit that will suck you from the very first episode.
The show is interminably cool, but it also has heart. It’s breaking ground in its depiction of female friendships on television, and there are rumors they are going to to introduce TV’s first asexual main character. It’s far smarter than you would ever guess, and it’s even more addictive.
Don’t let all the square jaws, hot bodies, and smoldering glances fool you. It’s doing something really interesting with tried and true CW paradigm of the teen drama, and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. The first season is still airing, but you can get caught up on CWTV, and read all about what I think right here.
Starring: Cole Sprouse, KJ Apa, Lili Reinhardt, and Camila Mendes
