Wonder Woman: Two New Spots Introduce the World to Diana Prince

Just a little more than a month away from the release of Wonder Woman, Warner Bros. released two new (and amazing) spots, “Together” and “Power.”

Just because we expect everyone in the world to know who Wonder Woman is doesn’t mean that people actually do. More importantly, Warner Bros. is fighting an uphill battle and they need people to not only know that Wonder Woman hits theaters this summer, but that it’s going to be an amazing film. If anything, it may be Warner Bros. best entry in the current DC Extended Universe.

With that in mind, it’s a little disappointing that Wonder Woman’s marketing has been close to nonexistent this entire year. (Comparatively, I cannot get away from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 no matter how hard I try.)

Of course, this concerns fans for several reasons. Why isn’t Warner Bros. putting their backs into the first female live-action film? Since Patty Jenkins is fairly active on Twitter, I’m wondering why Warner Bros. didn’t just get out of her way and let her keep carrying this movie along with Gal Gadot? It’s just too quiet on the Themysciran front.

But Thursday (not even Wonder Wednesday) gave the world not one, but two surprises. Both Gadot and Jenkins shared Wonder Woman spots on their Twitter. And you know what? They are, in fact, very wonderful.

Check out the first one, aptly named “Power”:

So, going to back to what I said at the beginning — this spot was a beautiful summation of Wonder Woman. Anyone who is unfamiliar with her various comic book storylines or multiple origins can easily jump into this big-screen story. “I will fight for those who cannot fight for themselves,” Diana says about halfway through. That’s like the Wonder Woman mantra. She’s not there just because she looks cool. Instead, her biggest motivation for leaving Themyscira so willingly is because people need her. People, who are otherwise unable to fight for themselves especially, need her. That part always strikes me the most. While I may not have the power of a gods, Wonder Woman would share hers.

And the second spot released is “Together” and adds a few more people to the mix.

Remus Lupin is there, hoorah. Actually, it’s David Thewlis, whose character remains under wraps. Although, pretty much everyone has accepted that he’s playing Ares.

Generously, “Together” establishes two things: that Thewlis works closely with Steve Trevor and that Steve Trevor helped with naming Diana’s alter ego. I mean, it could be said earlier and he’s just trying to cut her off sooner rather than later, but I think this particular origin seems like a perfect fit for the film.

Also, Wonder Woman’s lightning is going to be a thing and everyone needs to get their bodies ready.

Now, if you think about the music and how well cut these TV spots are, it hurts a little that they come out so few and far between. But the consolation is that Wonder Woman hits theaters on June 2 and will probably be the best movie of the year.
