Doctor Who Season 10: “Thin Ice” Trailer and Synopsis

Doctor Who’s new season continues as the Doctor and Bill find themselves in London in 1814. But what’s lurking beneath the frozen Thames at the city’s famous Frost Fair?

Doctor Who Season 10 continued last week with its first proper, non-premiere episode. And new companion Bill got to go on her first proper trip as a companion. She and the Doctor traveled to a human colony in the far future, where robots communicated only in emoji. And as first adventures go, it was a pretty great story.

After the events of “Smile”, Twelve and Bill find themselves unexpectedly in 1814, instead of their intended destination of 2017. What are they doing there? We don’t know yet.

But the official BBC synopsis makes “Thin Ice” sound like a pretty creepy monster-of-the-week mystery.

"London, 1814. The entire city has turned out for the biggest Frost Fair in decades. But beneath the frozen Thames, revellers are disappearing, snatched through the ice and pulled into the depths where a terrifying monster lurks. Will the Doctor and Bill stop the slaughter before they too are dragged into the icy waters?"

This sort of adventure is a natural next step for Bill as a companion. She’s been to the future, so now it’s time for her to go to the past. (This particular trip may not exactly be her choice at the moment, sure. But if the trailer is anything to go by, she seems pretty excited about the possibilities it presents anyway.)

Is anyone else kind of excited about the fact that Bill’s journey is mirroring Rose’s in so many ways so far? (Not that this episode will likely be anything like “The Unquiet Dead”. But the pattern is there in terms of the order of her adventures.)

“Thin Ice” is written by Sarah Dollard (who penned “Face the Raven”) and directed by Bill Anderson, in his Doctor Who debut.
