As strange as it sounds, Karen Gillan revealed her character, Nebula was never supposed to survive the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

Karen Gillan is poised to make a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in a tremendous way. Her role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2  has increased, and she would also appear in Avengers: Infinity WarWith the premiere of the Guardians sequel only days away, she recently sat down with ScreenCrush and dropped a proverbial bomb. Gillan states her character Nebula was never intended to survive the first Guardians movie. Here’s what she had to say how everything went down.

"“Then suddenly they rewrote her ending — and then they rewrote it again, and I was like, ‘Oh, okay. What’s going on?’ I was really shocked when I got to come back and as part of the team in the next movie. That was amazing! I definitely didn’t expect that.”"

Nebula Survives

We really shouldn’t be all that surprised about the news that Nebula wasn’t supposed to make it out of the first movie. It really makes the fact Guardians of the Galaxy didn’t give her a more fleshed out backstory understandable. One of the only criticisms from Guardians of the Galaxy is the fact that Nebula didn’t have much of a part to play in the storyline.

At times Nebula came off more like a petulant child of Thanos rather than the awesome space pirate she’s destined to become. You have to give Karen Gillan credit for her commitment to a role. She famously shaved her head for her role in Guardians of the Galaxy, knowing full well she would only appear in one movie. Glad to see her dedication has been rewarded and her talent will be displayed in the next MCU movies.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 swings into theaters May 5, 2017. You’re not going to want to miss this.
