Here’s The New Cars 3 Trailer… Wow, I Wasn’t Expecting That

Disney-Pixar released the official trailer for “Cars 3″ and it is quite a ride.

The two-and-a-half minute Cars 3 trailer sucks the air out of the room, as it opens with an extra big dollop of reality-check: Lightning McQueen’s career is ending because he is too old and he can’t do anything about it. Have fun, kids. We all die eventually.

Owen Wilson returns as the voice of McQueen, and in the beginning of this trailer we’re once again reminded of the ever-improving technology of Pixar — stunning fly-over footage of a stadium that puts Beijing’s Olympic Bird Nest to shame, and McQueen flying high as we left off in the previous two films. At the height of his commercial success, McQueen seems to sustain an existential break (like all celebrities I’m sure), as he asks his manager, “why?” “To ensure your legacy,” he responds, and quickly dives into an unsolicited real talk with our beloved main character. Wow, that got dark fast.

About halfway through the trailer, we’re introduced to Jackson Storm (appropriately voiced by pretty boy hot-shot Armie Hammer), who is clearly going to usurp McQueen’s title of Best And Most Loved Racecar Ever. In preparation for their showdown, McQueen consults a plucky trainer who is also a big fan of McQueen’s. She also calls him her “senior project” as if her client is some sort of fixer-upper jalopy. Man, this poor guy can’t catch a break!

But in true Disney-Pixar form, an important moral is already presented: be grateful for the opportunities that come to you in life, they shape who you are. “Don’t fear failure,” the trainer says, “be afraid of not having the chance! You have the chance!” Strong stuff for a little old trailer. In addition, brain over brawn, be in the moment, appreciate what you have.

To be honest, this trailer is a lot, but Cars 3 does promise to be another substantial contribution by Disney-Pixar, and one to definitely watch this summer.
