Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2 Adds in Jude Law

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them’s sequel film has added in another big name for a very big character in Jude Law.

Although Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them takes place long before the Harry Potter franchise that spawned it does, and indeed long before the Boy Who Lived existed, that doesn’t mean that there’s not some capacity for crossover. Not everyone in the series is a teenager, after all. In fact, one rather important character is most emphatically not a teenager.

We’re talking, of course, about Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts. Today, Variety reported that the sequel to Fantastic Beasts has found its younger version: Jude Law. (Please insert all of your jokes about the star of The Young Pope now becoming the young(er) wizard here. Additionally, we don’t think Dumbledore would be quite as fond of Cherry Coke Zero. Coca-Cola, on the other hand, well … he does like sweets, doesn’t he?)

Anyway, as Variety notes, Fantastic Beasts will show Dumbledore in his capacity as a Transfiguration professor; they also mention Gellert Grindelwald. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that we’ll see the duel between Grindelwald and Dumbledore in this movie. In the canon, that doesn’t happen until 1945. Although outlets like ScreenRant have reported that the sequel does skip a few years, that doesn’t magically (pun intended) get us from the 1920s all the way to 1945.

That same report also notes that the movie will take place in Paris, which also begs the question of how on earth Dumbledore will get involved beyond his already-known by fans connection to Grindelwald. Will Law’s appearance take the form of a small cameo to tease fans back to the next movie? Or will he instead play a major role in helping Newt Scamander?
