Tom Cruise Paints It Black in New Mummy Trailer and It’s Totally Bonkers

The new trailer for The Mummy starring Tom Cruise picks an interesting song and features a lot of action sequences that are totally on brand for Tom Cruise.

Say what you will about Tom Cruise but the man can put together an action sequence. Of course, he’s known primarily for the Mission: Impossible franchise. And that franchise continues to go strong simply because Tom Cruise flips BMWs on the regular and tries to hold his breath for three minutes while Simon Pegg does or says something silly. It’s not necessarily meant to be substantial, but I like them a lot.

However, I get the impression that Tom Cruise wants The Mummy to be really substantial. In other words, there’s going to be a lot of hokum that Tom Cruise wants you to take seriously. Admittedly, with a big production budget, I may be persuaded. As part of Universal’s “monster-verse,” this film looks incredibly ambitious.

In the newest trailer, there are explosions and guns, Tom Cruise’s famous “go, go, go” voiceover, and his stoic “I’m confused” face. To be fair, Sofia Boutella plays Princess Ahmanet / The Mummy and I think she’s going to be a worthy adversary for Tom Cruise. That’s in terms of both cool, action scenes and all-around character development. If there’s one thing I like about Tom Cruise, it’s that he moves out of the way when women start kicking ass. I go to the movies for Tom Cruise, I stay for the badass women.

This premise of the film seems legit. But just because the song’s called “Paint it Black” doesn’t mean it’s the right fit. The guitar does not sound good over those action sequences and I hope the score of the film does a lot better than that. Not to mention, I only think about the innumerable hours logged on Guitar Hero when that song plays.
