Are you still hanging onto all those VHS tapes hoping they’ll be worth a ton of money soon? They might not be, but imagine if you had a Rogue One VHS!
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story finished its theater run and will hit Blu-ray and DVD on April 4. The digital copy has already been released, which is why all the new stories and GIFs have popped up all over the internet. But if you’re keeping your fingers crossed for HitClips version that you can listen to on your mini boombox, it’s never going to happen.
Meanwhile, there are creative and generous people out in the world that want to remind us that 1997 was 20 years ago. Narrated by Anthony Sevins, this fan-made trailer shows us what it would be like if Rogue One was going to come out on VHS. It kind of looks like a VHS commercial that you’d watch on another VHS. Obviously, it’s like watching the DVD “Coming Soon” pre-game before the movie starts.
It plays really well to your nostalgia. Unless you’re my age and the fuzzy feed gives you a headache and you’re the type of person that keeps Netflix on mute in the background while you play Legend of Zelda on your Nintendo Switch and read off the guide on your iPad, meaning outdated technology like a VHS scares you. (I’m joking.) (Sort of.)
Check it out below.
I mean, technically you could have a copy of Rogue One on VHS. Unfortunately, it would require a couple of different hook ups and the video wouldn’t be worth it. They shoot movies nowadays for the highest definition possible. And the analog functionality of a VHS isn’t worth reverse taping it just for the thrill of saying you have Rogue One on VHS. Even if you got the software or one of the dual player doohickeys or bypassed the copyright infringement, the frame isn’t going to sync up right.
Hence the grainy callback in the above promo. It’s not just for aesthetic.
Also, I looked up what an Aladdin VHS goes for and I can’t figure out how the price tag got so high. But apparently, I’m sitting on a thousands of dollars worth of Disney videos.
