9. “The Gathering” Episode 4

After a couple of days, Claire is already plotting her escape from the castle and the entire clan. It’s also in this episode when Dougal shines. Claire is counting on all the clansman to be too busy at the gathering to notice that she’s gone. During her hasty exit, she ends up running smack dab into some lecherous clansmen who want to rape her. A very drunk Dougal protects her but also sexually harasses her. Thankfully Claire can save herself from the unwanted advances of a drunken war chieftain. She eventually makes it to the barn. Just when she thinks Inverness is in her sights, she runs into Jamie. He takes Claire back to the castle after he explains why her idea is flawed. Before he found Claire, Jamie was also hiding out trying to avoid making an oath of loyalty to his uncle, Collum. That goes out the window after running into Claire. How many meet-cutes are these two going to have before they kiss? We see the lingering glances, Claire.

One of the best moments of the episode is when one of Dougal’s clansmen is killed during a boar hunt. It’s Dougal who holds the victim in his arms and mourns him. For someone like Claire, a war nurse, she has a lot of respect for Dougal. Again, the show had done a fantastic job in the character development department.
