10. “The Way Out” Episode 3

After meeting Geillis in episode 2, Claire tries to reach out and become friendly, with the self-described Witch. We find any episode with Geillis made hundred times better with her mere presence. We are also treated to a Claire and Frank a flashback that’s not in the books. It shows a Claire and Frank headed to their new post. Claire is going to the front lines, and Frank is going to the war offices in London. As they are saying goodbye Frank is unsure if he should feel emasculated that his wife is going to be in harm’s way and she is the one reassuring him. Claire, on the other hand, has no problem being 20th-century women who doesn’t prescribe to stereotypical gender roles.

While Claire might be a prisoner of Clan MacKenzie, she is not going to let gender stereotypes of the 18th-century change who she is. Each time Claire conquers another gender stereotype you can almost see her give herself a mental fist bump. For Claire, it’s almost like she’s getting a bit of herself back. We see this when she correctly medically diagnoses a young boy and also uses Jamie to free a kid who has been nailed to a piece of wood as punishment. There is one area Claire hasn’t been able to exert her dominance, and that’s in the sphere of intimacy. We already know Jamie is more than willing to volunteer as a tribute, but he’s looking for something long term.
