14. “Both Sides Now” Episode 8

The episode “Both Sides Now” was written by Outlander producer Ronald D Moore. Knowing this would be the mid-season for season 1 we all knew the show would be left in one huge cliffhanger. Little did we know it was going to be Jamie literally left hang out of a window for months. Some of the highlights of the episode are observing Black Jack Randall and Claire trying to outwit each other. It’s akin to watching a cat playing with a mouse. One shouldn’t be surprised Randall is going to try to rape Claire considering he tried to do that in the first episode “Sassenach.”

What did leave me a little out of sorts was after getting an episode like “The Wedding” the next episode that focuses on almost exclusively on Frank. The book doesn’t go in-depth into what happened to Frank after Claire time travels. That’s for a good reason; the story is told from Claire’s perspective.

We do like the fact we did get some understanding that Frank went through while Claire was gone. I’m not sure what episode they could have fit this into, but it felt like a bucket of cold water after an incredible wedding episode.
