“The One at the Beach” – Friends

It’s rare for this group of pals to leave the mean streets of New York City, but when they do, you can be sure that shenanigans will definitely ensue. In the third season, we were all reeling from Ross and Rachel’s “break” and this finds the couple negotiating a reconciliation. We all remember that 18-page (both sides) letter she wrote.

Their house, due to some undisclosed flood damage, had a sand-covered floor, and the weather was crummy all round. This may have been a thinly veiled metaphor for the trainwreck of a relationship between Ross and Rachel.

Episode after episode we watched these two push and pull, and it became the most grating thing about the show for a while. This beach trip brought all that “break” nonsense to a head, and the tension finally bubbled over. That dumb letter was just a symptom of a pretty unhealthy relationship.

Although all the intense relationship stuff made for an uncomfortable vibe for the rest of the buds, all that togetherness will really put you in the mood for a little get away with your squad. It’s just not a real vacation until somebody falls asleep in the sand and you construct a mermaid body around them. Good times.
