“The Hamptons” – Seinfeld

I might be mistaken about this because I’m not really a TV historian, but I believe this episode of Seinfeld coined the phrase “shrinkage” to describe this certain situation.

After getting out of a chilly pool while on vacation in the Hamptons, George accidentally flashes a fellow houseguest, and is harshly judged because of the effect of the water on his man bits. Rightfully defensive and embarrassed, George tries to convince the onlookers that what they see isn’t a true representation of his actual anatomy.

Although I feel terrible for George, I’m grateful for the contribution. There are very few terms that can so succinctly sum up a particular situation. Thanks to George Costanza, and the writers at Seinfeld, every male swimmer has something to blame their … ahem … shortcomings on. Thanks Seinfeld.

Aside from George’s revealing moment, we also learned that it is perfectly fine to call a baby ugly. And heaven knows we’ve all seen a baby that we knew wasn’t cute, and had to say so, anyway. Again, thanks, Seinfeld, for making it okay to think babies aren’t attractive when they aren’t.
