The Walking Dead returned this week with “The Other Side.” If you missed it then you’ll want to check out our recap below!

Emotions Rise

Some weeks, The Walking Dead provides you with episodes that satisfy the fight inside of you, they’re more physical than anything and they get your blood moving. And then, some weeks, The Walking Dead shows its emotional side, where the conversations are the things that advance the story line further. This episode “The Other Side,” was a little of both but mostly, it was a slower pace than it usually is.

After an intense first half of season seven, this season has definitely seen a change in character and I can’t say I’m hating it. This week, the story is focused at the Hilltop, where Maggie and Daryl have to hide from the Saviors, and where Rosita and Sasha make a decision that could change their lives forever.

Life at Hilltop

This week had a silent open that introduced us to life as we know it at Hilltop. Maggie, Sasha, and Enid have made a home outside of Alexandria and they spend their days somewhat normally. They’re training the community to fight. They blacksmith is making weapons. They’re grillin, chillin. You know, enjoying life in the apocalypse. It showed that Daryl is still overcoming some emotional trauma from being locked up at Negan’s. It showed Maggie and Enid’s sense of home there. But it also showed Sasha’s need to get back at the man who killed Abraham. She’s losing her mind at Hilltop and needs to get out and do something about it. So lucky for her, at the end of the opening sequence, Rosita shows up with a plan. They’re going to Camp Negan together and they’re going to kill the man whose flipped their world upside down.

Sasha and Rosita sneak out just in time before the Saviors show up to take their doctor back to Negan. Because you know, the one at Camp Negan was killed and all. The two doctors from these two communities actually turn out to be brothers, which definitely made the story a little more interesting. A drunken Gregory is stirring up trouble on his own and throughout the episode, you’re on edge about him and what he could possibility tell the Saviors. Especially about Maggie and Daryl, since they both can’t be found by the Saviors or else they’ll probably be killed.

Risk Few to Save Many

It’s no surprise that Sasha and Rosita are both willing to risk their lives when it comes to saving their people. They finally make their way to Camp Negan and set up camp across the way in an abandoned building. While keep their eye out for Negan to come outside so they can take a shot at him, they bond over ex boyfriends and survival skills, finally finding common ground and openly talking about their relationships with Abraham. This was a scene that was much needed between these two women to not only further the character development of them both but to also further the development of the story.

While they’re in this nearby building, they get word that said nearby building needs to be searched because they’re expanding the gate that surrounds Camp Negan. How perfect. So it’s decided that the two women are going in instead of taking their shot from outside. Of course, we all know this probably isn’t going to end well.

We learn that Eugene has fully succumbed to Negan now and has betrayed the people of Alexandria. Sasha and Rosita go to break into the compound together but last minute, Sasha locks Rosita out and tells her that Rosita has a purpose in this world. Sasha is going in alone so if she dies, Rosita will be okay. While Rosita is having a somewhat mental breakdown about it, Daryl shows up just in time. Which will probably be helpful because I’m sure Sasha will get herself into a little trouble.

Until next week…
