The Books: Sex Criminals by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky
The Story: Writer Matt Fraction and illustrator Chip Zdarsky’s Sex Criminals is one of the most talked about comics, and not just because it’s about sex. The wacky, adult comedy is about a librarian (Suzie) and an actor (Jon) who discover that they can freeze time when they have sex. The two put their special gift to good use by freezing time and robbing banks.
The graphic novel series has three trade paperback collections already and has 19 single issues to date (including ones to be released later this year), with no official end date in sight.
The Adaptation: This is obviously made for HBO. First off, not many networks could get away with a title like Sex Criminals, let alone the subject matter. Considering Game of Thrones is often called the “tits and dragons” show, people expect sex and nudity on HBO now. They’d be the ones who could make an explicit show like Sex Criminals would have to be.
The series isn’t porn, however. Fraction called it a “sex comedy” in the style of Judd Apatow movies, so it might be more in line with HBO’s Girls.
In 2015, it was announced that Fraction had sold the rights to Universal TV and in 2016 he announced he had written the pilot episode. No network has picked the show up as of yet.
