1. The Kingkiller Chronicle

The Books: The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss.

The Story: Patrick Rothfuss’ The Kingkiller Chronicle is just about the biggest fantasy series these days.

The main books follow Kvothe, a famous musician and adventurer, as he tells his life story to his biographer, the Chronicler. The books cut between the present-day conversation between the two and the stories of Kvothe’s life that he’s describing. The high fantasy, high action story sees young Kvothe growing up as an orphan, attending a magic school, living as a fugitive on the run after killing a king (hence the name), uncovering assassination plots, traveling to a faerie land and even more.

The books are ostensibly a trilogy, but with a series of novellas and additional material are out there as well. The main series will consist of three books: The Name of the Wind, The Wise Man’s Fear and The Door’s Stone, which is still yet to be released.

The Adaptation: According to the Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate has plans to adapt the series into both movies and TV. The films will likely follow the main trilogy, while the TV show will fill in the gaps of the mythological world. Lin Manuel Miranda is involved in the adaptation and will be creating the music, which is an integral part of the series.

"“Pat Rothfuss’ Kingkiller books are among the most read and re-read in our home. It’s a world you want to spend lifetimes in, as his many fans will attest. Pat also writes about the act of making music more beautifully than any novelist I’ve ever read.”"

The involvement of Miranda all but confirms this will be a huge cultural phenomenon, whenever it will be released.
