The Books: Nimona by Noelle Stevenson
The Story: Nimona is the story of a shapeshifting teenage girl in a part futuristic, part medieval fantasy world. Nimona is the assistant to a villain, Lord Ballister Blackheart. Blackheart is a mad scientist who is obsessed with taking down the heroic Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin. The series starts out with Nimona and Blackheart plotting their villainy, but eventually the series grows more complex and even adds an unexpected love story.
Nimona was published as a graphic novel in 2015.
The Adaptation: First it was a webcomic, then a book, next a movie? 20th Century Fox Animation picked up the rights to Nimona in 2015, with Oscar-winning animation director Patrick Osborne (Feast) set to direct.
It’s a smart idea because this one needs to stay true to its form and be animation. Some comics or graphic novels lend themselves easily to live action, but Nimona isn’t one of them. Imagine how rough the special effects would be when Nimona transforms into a shark! Animation is also more true to the fun and goofy nature of the series. Hopefully the studio can try to keep Stevenson’s signature style intact and not turn the very butch Nimona into a Disney princess knock-off.
