10. The Gone Series
The Books: Gone by Michael Grant
The Story: Michael Grant’s sci-fi/fantasy/dystopian story takes place in a world where everyone at or over the age of 15 disappears from the town of Perdido Beach. A group of local kids decides to investigate the area and find layer upon layer of mystery: an old nuclear plant, an accident that gave people superpowers, different creatures, long lost siblings… and that’s just the first book. The series keeps building upon its own mythology and asking more questions, often keeping readers on their toes.
The Gone series has seven books in total, with the latest set to come out this year: Gone, Hunger, Lies, Plague, Fear, Light and Monster.
The Adaptation: It’s made for the CW! The mystery series is often described as Lord of the Flies meets Lost or Heroes. All young, teenage protagonists are ripe for a CW adaptation. The network has done a lot of fantasy shows as of late (from The 100 to the DCTV slate) and the addition of Riverdale proves they can do dark and mysteries. Honestly, with a pitch like “Lost, but for teens” it’s a surprise the show hasn’t already happened!
Alas, a TV adaptation was announced in 2013, but nothing came of it.
