Joyce and Buffy

It must be really hard to be the mother of the slayer. I mean, a mother’s entire job is to protect her daughter, teach her how to succeed in the world, and help her realize how special she is. But how do you reconcile that with the fact that your daughter has to consistently save the world from evil, fight the undead, and grapple the hellmouth?

Although it may not seem like Buffy needed a mother, nothing could be farther from the truth. Joyce offered Buffy an escape from the insanity of her life. When most girls are getting pep talks about boys, grades, and sports, Buffy’s mother was counseling her on how to stay sane in the face of imminent death.

As strong and formidable as Buffy was in every way, she needed a soft place to escape, and Joyce was that for her. When Joyce died, Buffy felt untethered, and the feeling of being lost in the cruel world without the sanctity of her mother was a daunting feeling.

Buffy and Joyce prove that no matter what kind of woman you are, you need a mother to put her arm around you, touch your hair, and tell you you’re going to be okay.
