Tami and Julie

I’ve been completely open and transparent about my unconditional love for Tami Taylor. She’s gorgeous, compassionate, brilliant, and just generally knows exactly how to exist. I want to be Tami Taylor when I grow up.

The relationship between these two was often rocky. Julie rebelled against her mother’s values at almost every turn. While Tami didn’t always adore the small town life and it’s suffocating ways, she did the best she could to find a way to balance her desires with her obligations. Julie never felt the need.

Julie couldn’t understand why her mother was so accommodating to her father’s needs, why Tami so often took a backseat, or why she was so unrelenting in her involvement. Tami didn’t flinch, however. She showed up to the mothering fight everyday, and lots of days she lost the battle.

Even when things got out of control – like when Tami slapped Julie’s face in the front yard – Tami was just doing the best she could with the best she had. Everybody needs a mother that will fight for them that way. Tami had to face down Julie’s demons, both real and imagined, whether Julie liked it or not.

It’s no easy task, trying to take care of someone who refuses to see that they need it, but Tami never, once threw her hands up. She stuck it out, and when Julie finally came around, it was all worth it.
