The American version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo will finally get a sequel with The Girl in the Spider’s Web, but without the original cast or director.

Fans of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2009) or The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011) might be excited to hear yet another movie about Lisbeth Salander is on its way!

Or, maybe not.

Sony announced today it will be adapting the fourth book of the Millennium Series into a film, without stars Rooney Mara or Daniel Craig. Further, only director David Fincher plans to serve as a producer. Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe, the Evil Dead remake) will step into the director’s chair and look for an all-new cast.

The Girl in the Spider’s Web was released in 2015. Author David Lagercrantz wrote it after the death of Stieg Larsson, the author of the original trilogy. Critical reception to this book was mixed. And many fans of the series found it to be more commercial and generic than Larsson’s work.

Alvarez said in a statement:

"“Lisbeth Salander is the kind of character any director dreams of bringing to life.  We’ve got a great script and now comes the most fun part – finding our Lisbeth.”"

The early frontrunner for the role has been Swedish actress Alicia Vikander. But Alvarez’s frequent collaborator Jane Levy might be in the mix now.

Whoever gets the role of Salander enjoys the not-so-lucky task of being the third performer to bring that character to the screen. Noomi Rapace starred in the original Swedish trilogy and was considered by many to be the perfect Lisbeth. Additionally, Rooney Mara received an Oscar nomination for her work in the American The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo remake. So there are big shoes to fill for whoever ends up with the part.

Despite the Oscars success for Fincher’s film (five nominations and one win for Film Editing), the sequels stalled indefinitely for years. Fincher, Mara and Craig were all ready to do The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest, but problems behind the scenes put the films on hold. Looks like Sony decided to move onto something (kind of) different instead, despite the trio’s wishes to complete the trilogy.
