Goodbye To The Vampire Diaries? Don’t Be So Sure
On the heels of The Vampire Diaries’ series finale, The Hollywood Reporter brings news that another spinoff from the series creator may be in the works!
(Disclaimer: Post contains spoilers from Friday’s series finale of The Vampire Diaries.)
Fans of The Vampire Diaries may want to pause those goodbyes for now.
Stefan Salvatore’s body was hardly in the ground by the time The Hollywood Reporter dropped the news that showrunner Julie Plec may not be done with The Vampire Diaries universe just yet.
With one successful spinoff starting its fourth season this week (The Originals), Plec allegedly has another idea in store:
"“Obviously our timelines did not match up, so Caroline and Klaus are not coming face-to-face in this season. That being said, we do have crossover elements in the upcoming season of The Originals that’s about to start airing, and it all brings it back to what I see as a future for either The Originals or another piece of the franchise to launch off of the end of The Originals. So I look forward to being able to play around in that sandbox and see if I can make something of it.”"
At the end of Friday’s series finale, fans did get the chance to see flash forward snippets of the remaining character’s lives — including Caroline, who opens the Salvatore Boarding School for the Young and Gifted (holy X-Men reference) and receives a generous donation with a heartfelt letter from her old friend (and future love, if he has any say in it) Klaus Mikaelson.
May Klaroline fans get the ending they’ve all been hoping for? Stay tuned.
That being said, it does feel like TVD wrapped most of its storylines by the end. Bonnie is going off traveling, living her life with the spirit of Enzo forever with her. Jeremy, apparently, helps with the Salvatore Boarding School. Same goes for Caroline, Alaric and the twins. Elena goes to medical school and lives out her life happily with Damon, both of them human for the rest of their days. Matt Donovan is living his life on the police force, perhaps running for mayor one day.
So what more could there be? Maybe an X-Men-like series of the Salvatore Boarding School for the Young and Gifted? Or a spinoff of Bonnie’s adventures around the world, perhaps meeting more witches and covens, learning new magic?
Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
As for going forward, Plec plans to take a (well-deserved) vacation after the finale of her hit series (that aired for 8 years) before she considers tackling this mysterious second spinoff idea. Mark Pedowitz, president of The CW, confessed to be aware of the idea. And apparently, even had a clue before Plec explained it to him, according to the report.
"“Julie and I have only had casual discussions about it. I actually guessed what her plans were in one of our casual discussions. I saw them coming. And I think that is a discussion that we can have as we go into development. I think she had it set up the right way.”"
