George RR Martin Reveals New Cameo For Game of Thrones

George RR Martin took to his blog yesterday to confirm that Game of Thrones partnership with the MLB goes beyond advertising–there’s also a cameo.

When it was announced at the end of last week that Game of Thrones was partnering with major League Baseball to do promotion for the upcoming Season 7, it seemed like the strangest mix of things ever. Baseball, the least violent, unpolitical, most old fashioned sport that still has widespread popularity in the states, and Game of Thrones, the most violent, political show on TV? It seemed so strange. Baseball is Apple Pie and Game of Thrones is Grand Theft Auto–both utterly American, and yet utterly dissimilar.

The only connection seemed to be that writer George RR Martin and showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss, all being good old American boys, were fans of the sport, and therefore wanted this to be a thing. And that’s still my theory. But now comes word, confirmed by Martin on his NotABlog, that it goes a little deeper.

See, there’s a famous baseball player, who rather appropriately is referred to as “THOR” who made a cameo in Season 7 back a few months ago when they were filming in Spain.

According to Martin:

"Loved hearing that he’s a fan of the show. After all, I’ve been a Mets fan since 1962. Hell, one of the highlights was my life was attending Game 6 of the 1986 World Series. We had seats in the fourth row on the first base side, just beyond the dugout, and close enough to the field to count the stitches on the ball as it rolled between Bill Buckner’s legs. My dream, of course, is that Noah and his teammates will lead the Mets to another series, and give me a memory to go with ’86 and ’69."

Exactly what this “extra” role is has not been disclosed. But whatever it was, it was enough to lead to an entire promotional tie in for two of the most diverse American things there could be. Game of Thrones returns this summer.
