First Power Rangers Clip Gives a Better Look at the Alien Ship that Alpha Calls Home

We know that Liongsate and director Dean Israelite are taking the Power Rangers in a different direction, and now, we’ve got our first clip of the film.

Okay, quick, let’s run through this: Zordon chooses a group of kids to save humanity. Along with his assistant, Alpha, he trains them to fight big threats like aliens and small threats like bullies, all while balancing their school, home, and love lives. Boom. Easy-peasy.

While Lionsgate plans to leave much of that intact, they’re making the Rangers’ mission much grander. In addition, director Dean Israelite gave them a sleeker, more modern look along with their refreshed origin. Dubbed “coins” in one trailer, the chosen 5 kids discover small little pieces of

something that makes Zordon believe that Jason, Trini, Kimberly, Billy, and Zack are the Chosen Ones.

But before they meet Billy Cranston’s face, the Power Rangers get a chance to explore what appears to be Zordon’s own ship. It’s pretty techy, very large and looks like something you’d find in Transformers.

While almost kind of cool, it’s not the best way to make us excited for this movie.

No. To do that, they need to connect it back to the original franchise that started it all. To the people who some of us looked up to like real guardians of the universe. Yeah, I’m talking about the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers.

Which brings me to something that happened over the weekend in Toronto. In what I consider to be near perfect marketing, Amy Jo Johnson (the original Pink Ranger, Kimberly Hart) crashes an interview with Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, and Ludi Lin.

Watch this cute thing.

Actually, why isn’t the internet talking about Power Rangers at all? Did we already write it off? Did it pick the worst month to release as it prepares to go up against Logan, Beauty and the Beast, and Kong: Skull Island?

Power Rangers hits theaters on March 24.
